Interview with Roger Martin羅傑馬丁管理大師

This Monday, Yang and I went to a panel hosted by Roger Martin from Rotman School of Management. It was a panel joined by Udaya Patnaik of Jump Associates, Diego Rodriguez from Stanford d.school, and former IDEO Gentry Underwood of Orchestra. Also on the panel was Hilary Austen of Rotman, whose book "Artistry Unleashed" everyone received that night.

The term design thinking did not come up very often, but I think the ideas are basically the same thing. The audience was mostly from business disciplines that night -- sprinkled with some designers and artists (by broad definition) that inspired Hilary so much to write the book.

We were able to schedule a short interview with Martin himself, a very generous early morning hour in Palo Alto.

Roger Martin is famous for bringing design thinking in to business school -- which means business and business education.

Because of his tight schedule, we did shooting in the hotel. Finding a quiet corner was not easy!

The interview was a success, rich ideas and interesting discussions -- besides the bangs coming from hotel staff's morning duties! But they were very nice to accommodate our needs.

A documentary couldn't be done without the help of everyone surrounding you!

星期一Yang和我去聽了一場座談會，由多倫多大學的羅特曼管理學院院長，羅傑馬丁(Roger Martin)所主持。

當晚來聽座談的，大多是透過管理學院得到的訊息，所以商業人士居多，其他藝術家、設計師、等等的，點綴其中，是Hilary Austen口中給了他許多靈感寫這本書的創意思考者。

Hilary Austen也來自羅特曼管理學院，當晚來聽座談的大家都拿到了一本她所著的「Artistry Unleashed」。

受訪者除了Hilary Austen，還有顧問公司Jump Associate的Udaya Patnaik、IDEO及史丹佛d.school教授Diego Rodriguez、及前IDEO的創業家Gentry Underwood。

Artistry Unleashed這本書，以質化和量化的對立做出發點，拿傳統的企業作法和創意工作者做比較，指出不論領域職稱，能安然面對抽象問題、能夠並重專精和創意的，在某些程度上都有artist的本質，因此呼籲訓練過度的商業人才，要好好跟這些思考方式不同的人學習一下。

其實是用種不同的語言在說design thinking這個思潮背後的變化。在這裡要以design thinking名之，好像太強硬一點了喔！

不過Roger Martin是商學院中知名的design thinking提倡者，於是我們成功跟他約了一場小訪問。
聽聽他會怎麼說！

因為他在舊金山的行程很趕，所以我們就在他下榻的飯店作訪問，光找到一個安靜的角落就找好久～

除了偶而還是有飯店的工作人員的雜音之外，一個小時左右的訪談進行的很順利，我們這次跟大師的訪談很成功！

It's been a week since Muris Media produced the first version of the trailer. Yang and I have been trying to give input on the content, but only seem to mess up the originally well-cut video clip. Well, at least that means we're trying to go somewhere by communicating and adjusting. The big boss advised to let it sit for a few days. The assignment is to read the book, Aesthetics Economy or 美學CEO, just published in Taiwan last year.

We've always enjoyed meeting in our office and the efficiency of brainstorming together. After two Skype conference we're enjoying the efficiency as well.

自從繆思媒體剪出預告片之後，已經過了一個星期了，這段時間我們一直在溝通影片的故事內容，試做不同的版本，不過專業攝影人士和非專業人士討論交雜的結果真是相當混亂！||| 但這至少表示我們有在做溝通，試著做突破摟！老大建議先沈澱一下，留空間讓各種不同的觀點在潛意識裡去混熟一點。指定作業是閱讀去年剛出版的《美學CEO》。

每次繆思來我們辦公室開會都很愉快，人多就有活力，最近發現Skype的小型線上會議更輕薄有效率。

Filming in New York 前往紐約展開拍攝

Shooting took off in New York. It was an intense trip with so many great people to talk with...... the crew worked their a** off and brought back spectacular results.... how many TBs was the entire footage? And almost everyone got a cold. I wasn't there to join on the action :/ It's amazing. We are really making a movie!

紀錄片的拍攝從紐約開始───短短幾天內要訪問好多人，而且是訪問難得一會的大角色大人物！前去紐約的夥伴們超級辛苦的，而且一到紐約就重感冒，雖然如此還是帶了快要1TB的毛片回來？不能現場參與實在太遺憾了......向繆思和老大的賣命致敬！ 拍了片，開始有些真實感......天呀，我們真的要拍電影咧！

六十歲的年輕創業家George Bylerian

George是一位很風趣的老先生，外表年紀與心智似乎不成比例，我覺得他比較像是個年輕的創業家，一直對我說有好多的想法跟想做的事情，非常愉快的聊天過程，問了一個問題他就會滔滔不絕的講，再補充幾個自問自答的的片段，讓我準備的問題毫無用武之地。


他講到設計思考與商業思考本質上的不同，他對設計極度喜愛，但也擔心設計把他原本喜愛的東西破壞了。

Interviewing Bill Moggridge設計博物館館長Bill Moggridge

It's been a while since I last met Bill. He was one of the first advocate and practitioner of design thinking, a calm, thoughtful character.

He talked about the past 20 years he spent in Silicon Valley, facing endless changes ever day and was challenged to response and make decisions quickly. That was the time he and his comrades founded what would then be IDEO, and carried the spirit and philosophy to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Bill is one of those considerate bosses who made his own office into a coffee break lounge for employees. He prefers to move around the building and work with everyone.

Marianne, Bill's secretary, gave us all the warmth in that rainy, gloomy, pouring day. She kept offering us hot tea and snacks as well as lunch from the cafe downstairs, so that we would have the energy to carry on the shooting. Thank you Marianne!

好久沒有見到Bill了，他是一位非常沉著穩重的長者，是最早提出Design Thinking想法，並且是最早的實踐者之一。他談到20多年來，如何在變化一日千里的矽谷，接受新挑戰，快速應變整合，與其他夥伴開創今日的IDEO，並且如何把這樣的精神繼續帶到國家設計博物館，Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum。

Bill 是一個很體貼部屬的老闆，他把自己的辦公室讓出來給員工當午餐休息室，自己則隨心所欲，到各個部門與員工同在。

Marianne是Bill的秘書，對我們非常友善，一直怕我們太累了，頻頻供應茶水、咖啡及點心，最後還要求樓下café提供我們午餐，記他的帳上，外面大雨滂沱，但心頭滿滿溫暖。
