The first time I listened to Tearjerker's album, Stranger, it made me feel like I was walking on a wide prairie and facing the winds. The music style is kind like a unfettered life with tiny depression which might be the best portrayal for people who live in the city.

A while ago I read a post about bootstrapping on Guy Kawasaki's blog. It gave us some good spiritual advice on how to take on this project.
'
Before coming to the Bay Area, I never thought I'd have anything to do with entrepreneurs or starting a business. After I came, the ideas were just absorbed into everyday life. Entrepreneurial mindset and "process" lies in many ambitious or adventurous things you are doing, and that's probably very much like how we look at design thinking in this movie.

Bootstrapping became common as a entrepreneurial-related term, and I like it because it's quite descriptive. Pulling your self up by your bootstraps, lifting yourself up when you don't have anything to hold on to. It's hard, and it's somewhat magical once it's happening bit by bit.

Oh yeah, that's what we're doing!
It went well, because Dan spoke to his mind's content and interview took twice as much time as it should've been. But I also felt really sorry, because we were asking too many questions. After the speaking, he brought us to the factory and introduced the design philosophy and products in Smart Design. He even gave us a peek at secret ongoing projects at his desk.
Actually, it was Mitchell, Jacob's band mate who contacted us. They play in the band Branches, and this is Jacob the banjo/mandolin player's solo album. For my personal taste, his music struck me right on the spot... just the right amount of imagination, reminiscence, and description.

Last Wednesday we had a small meeting today for the first time after launching Kickstarter. While making plans for next round of shooting, we shared again what the film means for each of us. They're all a bit different.

The visions kept adjusting, and calm as we seem, finally making it public made us(or just me?) really really nervous. None of us has ever been this public, and suddenly we must be responsible of all the little ideas behind the project.

Design thinking is a really interesting idea to share, especially when we are bringing a cross-cultural perspective.

To many of us here, design thinking is already in the "grow up and move on" phase. But not so to those in different times and regions. Is our Chinese society again being receptive of a western thought movement? Or could the reaction be something that evolves the orignal ideas?

If you could control it, would you rather have the recent design thinking topic never appeared?
If you could cut in, what would you want to say to the people new to design thinking?

There are lots of great quotes from the interviewees. We really want to share all of them, but don't want to "spoil the movie." Maybe a postcard collection will be a good idea?

Here is the first one:

"Design is a tool. It’s not a luxury. It’s a discipline."
It's a quote from George M. Beylerian, Founder of Material ConneXion.
It's actually in the trailer. Did you catch it when you watch it?

To be continued...

Since my years in the United States, I've have had so many chances to visit different places, talked with a lot of people and understood different characteristics of different cities. Although I write and shoot for the company's blog and magazine, I often wonder if there are other ways I can share with more people what I've seen and heard. But I didn't really push that thought until I met Iris and Mu-ming.

Two days before an important event, I received a self-introducing email offering their video documentary capabilities. I was going to put off the reply until after the event, but then I thought, why not let them help me with the event? We've never had an event video recorded.

And that was our first cooperation. This decision gave the event participants a heart touching video and eyes brimming with tears at the end of the event.

Iris and Mu-ming are quite into design and during our review meeting, they shared their interest in design thinking and said, how about shooting a short film about it? Mu-ming asked me to find two people for him and he'll make a 5 minute film.

I thought, "Are you kidding me?" He added, "For free!" And so we began on our second cooperation. His proposal was so heart stirring, and when I said let's make it 50 minutes instead of 5, now they were the ones who were shocked.

Now, only three weeks until the annual ICFF show in New York which I'd be attending. Am I really going to start shooting in this trip? I have travel budget, but what about Iris and Mu-ming? Could I really convince anyone to accept my interview? Am I really good enough to start making a movie?

I flipped open "Change by Design", a sentence popped out: "Design Thinking is thinking by doing." Alright! I sat down with my best partner Melissa, produced a proposal, and start shooting emails right away. Fortunately, 7 out of 8 accepted my interview request! Thinking by Doing -- that's the spirit!

The NY trip was a tough one. Business traveling with two more people was quite different. When I reported my 9-day itinerary to my company, my boss gave me a call. Why are you in New York for 9 days when the conference is only 4 days? There was no way I could convinced him but I've already booked plane tickets. Well, let's do it anyways.

YANGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08579730332807452990noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7845036786293857030.post-87019689438057142472011-07-01T12:04:00.001-07:002011-07-05T14:06:47.610-07:00We ARE on Kickstarter!

Making up a movie title is Not Easy! To be relevant and interesting at the same time... That's why we got back to the simple and direct option: Design & Thinking. Leaves enough space for some interpretation.

A former title we used for a long time (within team) was Think Like a Designer. Is that better?

We've only really thought of 2~3 titles to choose from. See how that's not our strength!
Takes cans and cans of Costco chocolate peanuts to decide.

This Monday, Yang and I went to a panel hosted by Roger Martin from Rotman School of Management. It was a panel joined by Udaya Patnaik of Jump Associates, Diego Rodriguez from Stanford d.school, and former IDEO Gentry Underwood of Orchestra. Also on the panel was Hilary Austen of Rotman, whose book "Artistry Unleashed" everyone received that night.

The term design thinking did not come up very often, but I think the ideas are basically the same thing. The audience was mostly from business disciplines that night -- sprinkled with some designers and artists (by broad definition) that inspired Hilary so much to write the book.

We were able to schedule a short interview with Martin himself, a very generous early morning hour in Palo Alto.

Roger Martin is famous for bringing design thinking in to business school -- which means business and business education.

Because of his tight schedule, we did shooting in the hotel. Finding a quiet corner was not easy!
The interview was a success, rich ideas and interesting discussions -- besides the bangs coming from hotel staff's morning duties! But they were very nice to accommodate our needs.

It's been a week since Muris Media produced the first version of the trailer. Yang and I have been trying to give input on the content, but only seem to mess up the originally well-cut video clip. Well, at least that means we're trying to go somewhere by communicating and adjusting. The big boss advised to let it sit for a few days. The assignment is to read the book, Aesthetics Economy or 美學CEO, just published in Taiwan last year.
We've always enjoyed meeting in our office and the efficiency of brainstorming together. After two Skype conference we're enjoying the efficiency as well.
Shooting took off in New York. It was an intense trip with so many great people to talk with...... the crew worked their a** off and brought back spectacular results.... how many TBs was the entire footage? And almost everyone got a cold. I wasn't there to join on the action :/ It's amazing. We are really making a movie!

He was one of the first advocate and practitioner of design thinking, a calm, thoughtful character.

He talked about the past 20 years he spent in Silicon Valley, facing endless changes ever day and was challenged to response and make decisions quickly. That was the time he and his comrades founded what would then be IDEO, and carried the spirit and philosophy to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Bill is one of those considerate bosses who made his own office into a coffee break lounge for employees. Meeting Muris Media was a wonderful surprise. What this talented two-person team bring to others is not just their expertise in filmmaking. They seem to bring the idea of "film" so much closer and tangible to whomever they meet. That is precisely why a film like this was possible......

Muris Media, 2-man company of Muming and Iris, has always been interested in design, and after working with us for a certain project, they were intrigued by the concept of design thinking. They simply said, why not make a film about this subject?

Having been in the design industry from the beginning, we weren't quite aware that this could be a topic of interest in a media like film/movies. Having seen the emergence of "design thinking," we weren't quite aware this is a new concept in many other places.

Part by chance, part by will, it started happening.

Since March, we are constantly thinking about what kind of story this film should be talking about. It is about design, which used to mean "fashion" for a few decades. It is about design thinking, and the debate that surrounds it. But how it connects to a whole larger audience is that, it is documenting a time when we are searching new ways of thinking, different way of doing things, and we are really finding new values. Which in all are actually not new; they are just making a comeback.

Shooting in the office with Muris Media :P Work is fun!
